Washington Post
SECTION: SUNDAY SOURCE; Pg. N08
BYLINE: Adriana Leshko
BASIC STORY:
The author, a charismatic activist, weighs in with a witty and well-researched
primer on "everything you wanted to know about animal rights
but were afraid to get into a fight about."
SAMPLE GRAB:
"The compassion shutdown switch that allows us to chew pieces
of veal while blocking out thoughts of baby calves alone in crates
is the same switch that guides us to change TV channels away from
news of children starving in Darfur."
WHAT YOU'LL LOVE:
Despite the gravity of the subject, Dawn is mercifully un-didactic
throughout, cutting grim facts with whimsical cartoons, celebrity
cameos and feel-good stories.
WHAT YOU WON'T:
Let's face it: A die-hard (and, man, do these animals ever) Darwinian
is not going to buy the book or its arguments, no matter how compelling
the reasoning and how soft the sell.
